It looks like diversity in Hollywood is picking up; in front of the camera, anyway. The upcoming Nate Washington film, ‘Bird of a Nation’ and Marvel Studios Black Panther movie both have predominately Black/Indigenous casts and directors. But it’s just a smokescreen. Despite what actor/director Matt Damon says, having real power and diversity in the film industry is being behind the camera in terms of production and film crew. Hollywood isn’t the only player in the movie game. Besides Europe, both India and Nigeria are making a huge impact in filmmaking with Bollywood and Nollywood respectively. Yet Indigenous Afro-Americans are lagging behind, despite having some of the most talented directors, actors, animators, casting camera and lighting, sound, etc., in the business. It appears we’re still waiting on Hollywood to assist us when we can be making films on our own. What can we do to improve our standing in the film industry? Why aren’t more prominent Afro-American actors banding together to make films. Will we support our own?
