A Kind Voice on Books

Tonight’s guest is fiction author Frank S. Joseph, who has written a novel called To Love Mercy. The book is a stream of conscious narrative set in 1940s Chicago, and deals with race and ethnicity in a segregated city. The narrative follows two main characters who are young boys–one black, one white–who, through their explorations and adventures become friends, while their parents and neighbors seem unable to release themselves from the grip of fear and long standing racial insecurity. To Love Mercy has won The Eric Hoffer Award for Excellence in Independent Publishing, and is written by an author who grew up in and knows the streets of Chicago as well as its history. It’s a testament to the power of youth at a time when young people may have been the best hope for changing the scenery in regards to race relations.
