A Kind Voice on Movies

Our guest on this episode will be film maker Bob Hurst and we will be discussing his new documentary "The Listeners - A Film About Suicide Prevention" which follows volunteers who learn to use empathy and skills as they counsel crisis and suicide hotline callers.

Bob Hurst is a filmmaker with more than 20 years of experience in film, television and related media. His work includes fiction, documentary and experimental films that have been exhibited at festivals nationally and internationally. He has also collaborated with filmmakers as sound supervisor and camera operator on many films, including King Corn (2007), Kansas vs. Darwin (2007), The Only Good Indian (2009), Destination: Planet Negro (2014). These films and others have been shown on national cable networks like Showtime and Starz, and on the PBS television program Independent Lens. Bob has contributed to permanent installation works at the African Burial Ground National Monument in New York and the International Civil Rights Center and Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina.

He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of Kansas who works with a great and inspiring bunch of colleagues with and whom he's also collaborated on films - including Madison Davis Lacy, who executive-produced Paris is Burning and Eyes on the Prize II while at WNYC; and Kevin Willmott, who is co-writing Spike Lee's new film, Chiraq.
