- Hong Kong, along with mainland China, is one of the few places in the world still pursuing a zero-Covid policy. The city's priority is reopening borders with the mainland, not the rest of the world, Hong Kong authorities have said. That means most non-residents are banned from entering, while almost all overseas arrivals must undergo 21 days of quarantine -- even if they are fully vaccinated.

- American Express and BlackRock are the latest major companies to urge employees to start 2022 by working remotely as Covid-19 cases skyrocket. 

- There will be a ceremony thrown by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) on Sunday, Jan. 9, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles -- the traditional location for the event -- but it will not be televised, there will be no audience and no red carpet. Organizers attributed the scaled-down event plans to the current Covid-19 surge.

-Two weeks after the Jan. 6 insurrection, Donald Trump walked out of the White House and Joe Biden became the 46th president of the United States.  But this was a close call. Attempts by Trump and his followers to overturn the results of the 2020 election -- multi-dimensional efforts of which the assault on the Capitol building was only one element -- came dangerously close to succeeding.
