This was a big technology case where Oracle sued Google for copyring 11,500 lines of code from the Sun Java Application Programming Interface ("API") and using the code to create the Androind operating system (the worlds most popular mobile operating system).
The United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled 8-2 that Googles use of the code (which was only .04% of the Java SE code) for a transformative purpose (creating a new operating system that allows people to do tasks) was a "fair use" under the United States Copyright Law and not an infringement of copyright warranting the 8 BILLION dollars Oracle sought.
