BIBLE CHAT CENTRAL :: GENESIS 1:1-3

The Greek title Genesis is translated as “origins”.  It is an appropriate title since the book is about the origin of the world and how God deemed it good and how it has been marred by human sinfulness.

Authorship

It was anonymously written about 1500 B.C. and is part of the Pentateuch.  The essential substance is written by Moses, and later on there were editors who supplemented it under the direction of the Holy Spirit. 

When it comes to the entire Bible, the first chapter of the book of Genesis is without equal.  This is simply because it give us an account of prehistory— which mean there were no human beings to observe what God did in the beginning.  The book of Genesis has been written for the purpose of:

1. To show us how worthy God is of our worship.
2. To show that He is a generous Father.
3. To show how merciful He is.
4. To show that He is a defender of His elect people.
