23 The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger."

The struggle between the two babies was a struggle not limited to what was going on in Rebekah’s womb.  This is representative of two distinct nations  who will be at war with one another.  We will learn later that God chose one of these babies to be in the line of Christ.

Just as God inverted the birthing order of Isaac, He inverted the order of nature which said the younger shall serve the older.  In other words. The younger child who was considered inferior comes out to be the victor, “And the older will serve the younger.”  By doing this God humbled the pride of the flesh (as we will see) and left nothing for either Isaac, Rebekah, or Jacob to boast about.  The facts show that both babies could not receive the covenant of salvation since Isaac and Rebekah were told that the covenant would apply only to Jacob’s posterity.  With that in mind, Esau would become the one God hated or passed over to receive the covenant of salvation.  To this day we have people who believe God and are a member of the faith covenant and there are those who do not believe and are enemies of God waiting to be destroyed.  Faith is what distinguishes the spiritual seed from the physical seed.
