What do you think Moses meant when he wrote “he loved Joseph more than all his other sons, as he was a son of his old age”?  Somehow children born to a father in his old age seem particularly dear and manage to attract their father’s favor in greater measure.  In Joseph’s case being a son born in Jacob’s old age was not the only factor for his father’s favor.  It was God’s grace that made him likeable and rendered preferrable to all of the others on account of the virtue of his spirit.  The scriptures tells us Jacob loved Joseph because he was a son of his old age and that served to increase the envy of his brothers.  This is not an uncommon situation today with parents who get a surprise birth in their later years, but they can also fail to perceive the spiritual sense of why it happened.
