Racial hoaxes can be traced all the way back to slavery. If a white person said a black man did something it was never investigated, on their word alone the black man could be hung. We discussed the recent story of the deaf Vancouver woman named Bethany Storro who accused a black woman of throwing acid in her face. Only after her lie took on a life of it's own and got national attention, even an interview request from the Oprah Winfrey Show, did Ms. Storro recant her story. We also talked about racial hoaxes from the past like the 1994 Susan Smith case, the 1989 Charles Stuart case, the 2009 Bonnie Anne Sweeten case and many others.
