Much of 1 Samuel is dedicated to the fact that Isreal's King did not establish the dynastythat offers stability to united Israel. At the beginning portion of this section Saul is clearly the man who will make Israel "like other nations." 

Samuel anoints Saul both privately and later publically. After Saul's anointing, he returns home to work. When Saul hears of the Bullying tactics of Nahash, the Ammonite king, he slaughters the Bull, and rallies Men to fight against this enemy. Even though God would have protected Israel, God allows this victory for Saul. Saul however must remember that all the glory be given to God and not to himself. 

 According to the commentary Saul's masculinity was an imporant factor in him being chosen as king. But was it enough to establish and unify the nation?
