You Must Be Born Again
Revised Geneva Translation
There was now a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus - a ruler of the Jews.
This man came to Jesus by night, and said to Him, “Rabbi(G4461 ῥαββί rhabbi rhab-biy'), we know that You are a teacher(G1320 διδάσκαλος didaskalos d̮iy-d̮a'-ska-los) from God; for no one could do these miracles that You do, except God were with Him.”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born(G1080 γεννάω gennao ǰen-naō') again(G509 ἄνωθεν anothen a'-nō-then), he cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born who is old?(#1) Can he enter into his mother’s womb again, and be born?(#2)”
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.
“That which is born of the flesh, is flesh. And that which is born of the Spirit, is spirit.
“Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born(G1080 γεννάω gennao ǰen-naō') again(G509 ἄνωθεν anothen a'-nō-then).’
“The wind blows where it will, and you hear the sound thereof, but cannot tell from where it comes, and where it goes. So is every man who is born of the Spirit.”
Nicodemus answered, and said to Him, “How can these things be?(#3)”
Jesus answered, and said to him, “Are you a teacher(G1320 διδάσκαλος didaskalos d̮iy-d̮a'-ska-los) of Israel, and know not these things?(#4)
“Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak that we know, and testify that we have seen. But you do not receive our witness.
“If when I tell you earthly things you do not believe, how shall you believe if I tell you of Heavenly things?(#5)
