Every message that is communicated is one particular message out of a set of many possible messages. Thus, Shannon’s definition of information is as follows: “(Gaining) Information is the ability to distinguish reliably among possible alternatives (messages).”
The transformability of information is due to the abstract nature of any message. The message or information is different than the medium through which it is transmitted or communicated.
