Between the 1930’s and the 60’s, the "future Neoconservatives" moved from opposition communists to Cold War Liberals.

They were Hawkish on foreign policy especially against the Soviet Union

But they still favored social democratic economic policies (like providing economic help from the government)

They became increasingly opposed to the (Democratic) New Left because the New left of the 60’s.

They are/were disaffected Democrats who were more conservative but conservative in a new way. NEO-CONSERVATIVE.
