Notes From “Islamic Jurisprudence According To the Four Sunni Schools [p. 58 Published by Fons Vitae]

“Linguistically speaking, the Arabic word wudu , translated here as "ritual ablutions”, means “beauty or excellence and cleanliness. It is a verbal noun. Its related verb is either tawadda’ a, in which case the verbal noun takes the form of tawaddu or wadu 'a, in which case its verbal noun is wida’ah. It is said that the verb wadu'a follows the verb pattern karuma.  Moreover, since wida’ah means “to be or become excellent, beautiful, clean and pure", the word wudu is thus another name for excellence, beauty, cleanliness and purity. This general meaning encompasses the type of cleanliness that results in both physical and spiritual purity. As for its more specific legal sense, wudu' refers to the use of water on particular members of the body, namely, the face, the hands, and so forth in a specified manner.
