“There has been a problem for men with respect to how women are to be received by man. I think, perhaps, going back to the most primitive man on earth. And it is simply because man has been, himself, a creature of trial and error and a creature, also, of cultural evolution and development. We believe, as Muslims, that it was the inspired men of God that brought the right idea to man and the right perception of women to men; and if we can accept that, we can go directly to the scripture to understand history.

Woman, in the Qur’an, is mentioned in several focuses. In one focus, woman is mentioned as the wife of man that is given in the Qur’an in the chapter that is entitled “The Women”, in the very first verse of the chapter. Woman, or the female, is also focused, again, as wife and then as mother. As wife woman and man, according to the Qur’an they were not separate. They were two in one life.

This is the Qur’an. So, we were created from “Nafsin Wahidah”, from one nafs.  We are not to understand this nafs (soul) as one person. It does not mean that. One nafs is translated as one nature and some have started to translate it now as,”from one soul” or ”One nature” and also,” from one soul. What are we to understand by, “Nafsin Wahidah”? The Wahidah is feminine, so it could not be talking, specifically, about a man. But nafs, the word for soul, person, or self, in the Qur’an, is referring to this one that G-d created the man and the woman from." Imam W. D. Mohammed(ra)
