31:20 Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him].

As a human being, by the nature of “human consciousness”, through my vision and mind, “I/My Self” can make all things my subject[1].  Becoming my “subject” means they are brought under my observation. This is easily demonstrated by the fact that wherever I go my sight makes the objects my subjects. Likewise, whatever is “conceivable” becomes my subject as well. Thus, by that means, I can conceptually, encompass any/all things just as space encompasses all things. Yet, space cannot encompass itself nor can consciousness encompass itself.

Observe! Just as I can examine “things” in space, I can examine the contents of consciousness [e.g., thoughts and thinking about my thoughts; cognition and metacognition] but I can’t get behind or outside of my consciousness, the medium in which my thoughts, so as to be able to “observe” my own consciousness from outside of it. This is no more possible that closing my eyes and standing in front of a mirror to see how I look when I’m sleep.
