What is a Jew?
There is no ethnic purity in that sense and the terminology itself is not borne out in the history itself. Roger Garaudy in his book, “The Case of Israel”. points out that “in reality, no Jewish race has ever existed except for in the mind of Hitler, in the Zionists. Because at every stage of history that “Jews”, have been components of other major ethnic groups, this is very important to understand. Israel's definition today is the same that was put forward by Ezra and Nehemiah who were the primary leaders of the return to Judah, the Judaic movement or Judaism.
The definition today in Israel, as to what constitutes a “Jew” is “One who was born of a Jewish mother, or one who has been converted to the Jewish religion.” That same definition was applied by Ezra and Nehemiah before the State of Israel, today.
