The last time that the beloved Carl Grubbs visited our show was several years ago.  We played tracks from his "Reflections" album then - and they were soul-stirring.  That's what he does, you know.  He stirs your SOUL.

And it's no surprise that he is capable of this.  Carl's first cousin, Naima, was married to John Coltrane.  Carl spent a LOT of time with Trane in Philadelphia.  He heard him rehearse/practice non-stop.  If music can be ABSORBED, that happened to Carl Grubbs!

He truly was surrounded by greatness, via Coltrane and other Philly greats.  Carl was inspired to pick up the sax and get deeply involved in Jazz.  He and his brother, Earl, formed The Visitors.  The quintet recorded four albums for the Muse record label.  Carl also is a former member of the Julius Hemphill Saxophone Sextet.  He was involved in Reggie Workman's tribute to Trane. As well, he played in Odean Pope's sax choir.  The Philadelphia Jazz Project thought enough of Carl's music to use it in a special presentation.  And ALL of this work - from hometown days to ADOPTED hometown recognition - resulted in many awards.  Including the Mary Sawyers Baker (coveted!) in 2009.  And the Ruby's Project Grant - which enabled Carl to revise & expand his "Inner Harbor Suite: A Tribute to Baltimore."  Jazz and strings never sounded so good!

This man is highly regarded in our mutual Charm City.  Carl is a MASTER of all that's sax.  He's a composer, educator and mentor to MANY.  He's also the co-founder and Artistic Director of Contemporary Arts Inc.  It's a non-profit.  And it serves youth 4 to 17.  Within this framework, too, are Jazz shows at senior centers.  Carl LOVES to "give back!"

A unique time on 7/3 (11 a.m.) and a GREAT artist - join us!
