Blending the styling sounds of Electro, Pop, R&B, Reggae and Rock, No Genre is more than an artist; he is an innovative visionary who has a pulse on music that is immeasurable. Storied with a familial music background that showcases the many facets of his artistry, his musical journey began at the age of 13 as he mirrored the melodic likings of his Father, Claydes Smith, founding member of the group Kool and the Gang.
As No Genre’s creative appetite grew, he started writing and arranging songs as an outlet to release anger and stress due to his troubled upbringing. Going by the alias J Mello, his talents piqued an interest in Chris Anokute of which in 2005, he signed a recording deal to Island Def Jam Music Group. During that time, he worked closely with LA Reid and the late Shakir Stewart crafting a catalog of Pop and R&B compositions. When the label went through the inevitable corporate restructuring, J Mello found himself dropped and back at square one. By then, David Navarro, member of Jane’s Addiction noticed his innovative genius and invited him on tour both domestic and international in 2007. J Mello had the pleasure to accompany other artists on the tour, including LMFAO, Gym Class Heroes and Tyga. Subsequently, David was also a part of the creative team that co-produced two tracks off of J Mello’s first and second albums “Torture” and “One More Try,” along with Grammy award winning producers Jerry “Wonda” Duplesis, Wyclef Jean, BumbleFoot of “Gunz N Roses,” and Latin Grammy award winning producer duo MilknSizz.
