Would you investigate a person your dating?

Just started dating someone and curious if you should take it to the next level, what do you do?  Do you have that person Female/Male background investigated, or do you believe what they tell you?  Do you think in today's society you should be cautious.   Should you check: credit, health, criminal offenses, childcare payments or custody issues.
