WNC Original Music - Ep 96 Songs of the Folk pt 3

    in Music

ongs of the Folk is a music duo formed by Tyler and Lauren Cason, based out of Western North Carolina, who perform original music that incorporates folk revival and roots-based elements within an elevated art form that focuses on lyrical content, innovative harmony, and unique instrumental techniques.
The couple met in college while obtaining their Master’s degrees in music. In 2015, the two formed the band, Swamp Rabbit Railroad, playing numerous shows across the Southeast, including the Savannah Folk Music Society, Isis Music Hall in Asheville, WDVX Blue Plate Special in Knoxville, an opening for Gabe Dixon at The Spinning Jenny, and an opening for Davina and the Vagabonds at The Grey Eagle. In 2017, Swamp Rabbit Railroad released a studio album, Down by the Riverside, a unique collection of spiritual folk songs recorded in a historic church in Upstate South Carolina and produced by Nashville artist/producer, Akil Thompson (Little Big Town, Jonny Lang, Kelly Clarkson). The album is currently available on most major listening platforms.

  • Joy Keys chats with Grammy winning Musician Billy Childs

    in Music

Billy Childs has garnered sixteen Grammy nominations and five Grammy awards: two for best instrumental composition (Into the Light from Lyric and The Path Among The Trees from Autumn: In Moving Pictures), two for best arrangement accompanying a vocalist (including New York Tendaberry from Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro, featuring Renee Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma), and one for best instrumental jazz album (Rebirth, 2018).
In 2006, Childs was awarded a Chamber Music America composer’s grant, and in 2009 was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2013 he was awarded the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. He has been awarded a composers award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2015).
Childs is currently serving as president of Chamber Music America.
“On my first Mack Avenue recording, Rebirth (Billy Childs’ 2017 album which won a GRAMMY® Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album), I wanted to return to a focus on my jazz piano playing,” Childs states. “Acceptance (2020) is an extension of that, and the musicians make it very comfortable for me.” Childs thrives on group improvisation and has recruited fellow master musicians—saxophonist Steve Wilson, bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer Eric Harland—as the core ensemble for this collection: Acceptance. Elena Pinderhughes on flute; vocalists Alicia Olatuja, Aubrey Johnson and Sara Gazarek; and percussionists Rogerio Boccato and Munyungo Jackson complete the stellar lineup on this recording.

  • A journey in music with Ty Davis on new single

    in Music

Ty Davis is a songwriter and musician from Philadelphia, PA. His love for music started when he was a child, listening to artists, such as Sam Cooke, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, as well as the great music out of Philadelphia International, Motown, Stax, and Atlantic Records. As a teen, he was heavily influenced by the multitude of bands that performed at the Philadelphia Uptown Theatre and Spectrum stadium and began playing drums and bass guitar at age 15. After many years of studying music and playing in gospel choirs and bands, he decided to record his first song, a smooth jazz tune entitled “Color Me Blue” which will instantly take you on a virtual vacation to your favorite tropical location. He followed it with another instrumental song entitled, “We’re in Love”. His latest song, entitled “Drop it Senorita” departs from the smooth jazz genre to get dancers off their feet when they hear the first verse. Ty Davis plays most of the instruments on his songs and collaborates with many of the top musicians in the Washington, DC area where he currently resides. You can find Ty’s music on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, YouTube and other social media platforms. You can also locate him on Facebook at Ty Davis, songwriter.
