Join me with guest Dr. Nathan Rogers talking about unstructured learning and how it is possible to learn when given the correct environment. Dr. Nathan's first encounter with finding a way to control his learning was in the 7th grade and algebra. With a teacher who used the class as his private comedy show and no help at home, it took him a long time to catch up. His second significant encounter was in the Air Force, where he was responsible for implementing personal computer usage for all Law Enforcement and Security Police operations. He had a little computer knowledge, then realized he didn’t have even half the required knowledge. Using informal learning (he didn’t have a name for it then), he patched many sources of knowledge and expertise together to learn what he needed to be successful. He was so successful; no one in the organization ever knew he didn’t have all the skill sets initially. Dr. Nathan is a Learning Consultant to the U.S. Justice Department within the FBI as well as an Adjunct Professor of Education teaching graduate classes. He is also the author of “Unstructured: The Power of Informal Learning,” and has a consulting practice called Empowered to Learn.
