 Most likely, you've heard of subliminal messages. It's also likely you've heard subliminal messages aren't effective. I'm sure you've heard there's no such thing as Satan, too. I hope you didn't fall for either one! If you check modern dictionaries, you'll find definitions like the following because subliminals are legitimate.

Subliminal: "existing or operating below the threshold of consciousness; being or employing stimuli insufficiently intense to produce a discrete sensation but often being or designed to be intense enough to influence the mental processes or the behavior of the individual: a subliminal stimulus; subliminal advertising." When words and images are presented below the threshold of our consciousness there is, by definition, no awareness of the stimulus and thus no opportunity to consciously control our response. Reason is removed from the equation. This situation is taken advantage of in many ways.
