Bob Marley, a Jamaican-born reggae legend, passed away from cancer in 1981 at the age of just 36, yet he left behind a vast musical legacy.
In addition to selling millions of records—since its 1984 release, his retrospective Legend has been in the Billboard Top 200 list for more than 570 weeks—Marley was awarded the 1978 United Nations Peace Medal of the Third World. In 1994, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame posthumously. Marley's "One Love" was named Song of the Millennium by the BBC. Marley also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
Globally, Marley's music still inspires and has an impact on politics, fashion, music, and culture. However, he had an extraordinarily complete life in a relatively short period of time, as the seven facts listed below demonstrate.
