"It takes a village to raise a child". This phrase was commonly used amongst African American people to talk about the responsibility of the community to nurture, raise and protect a child during the years of Segregation associated with Jim Crow. However, the US Supreme Court decision, Brown v. Board of Education, changed this philosophy in very unexpected ways.
