Proposed Changes to the Sunshine Law and Public Records Act

Whether the issue is meeting notices, minutes, committees or public comment periods, local boards of education and charter schools are governed by two laws: the Open Public Meetings Act and the Open Public Records Act.  These laws allow the public to better observe their government in action. Two current bills – S-1451 and S-1452 – would alter the operation of school boards in various areas. For instance, the measures would require board committees to adhere to provisions of the Open Public Meetings Act, require meetings to be recorded, and ban board members from texting during a meeting.
