All board of education members and charter school trustees must adhere to the School Ethics Act – the statute designed to ensure citizens can maintain confidence in the conduct of their local school officials. The body responsible for enforcing the act is School Ethics Commission.

In addition to ruling on disputes involving conflicts of interest and other matters of ethics, the commission enforces the mandatory training requirements for school board members. The commission’s rulings and advisory opinions help guide the actions of board members when questions of ethics arise.

Please join host Ray Pinney as discusses how the commission views the role of the school board member in governing the district operations, conflicts of interest, as well as the makeup and operation of the School Ethics Commission with two members of the commission, Robert Bender (Chair), Mark Finkelstein, and the Commission’s Executive Director Joanne Restivo.
