All school board members must abide by the Code of Ethics for School Board Members, which guides them in fulfilling their duties. In recent years, the School Ethics Commission has published advisory opinions which are designed to help school board members interpret what actions are appropriate as a school board member. In this podcast, NJSBA’s Ray Pinney is joined by John Geppart, a partner with the law firm of Scarinci and Hollenbeck, to discuss five recent advisory opinions. Discussion will shed light on a board member’s participation level in the areas of: volunteering in a school; the board’s role in interviews; if a board member works in public education, how does it limit their participation on the board; how can a relative’s employment affect their participation; and finally, what is the definition of a relative?
