Erin Lynne Hawkes had her first psychotic break during the final year of her undergraduate studies. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, she spent the next four-and-a-half months in a psychiatric hospital.

Today, at age 33, Hawkes is a neuroscientist and out with her first book: When Quietness Came: A Neuroscientist's Personal Journey With Schizophrenia.

One of the reasons Hawkes wrote the book is to help family and friends of people with schizophrenia better understand and sympathize with those afflicted with the illness. We discuss that in detail on this edition of the HealthyPlace Mental Health Radio Show.
