11 Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Candlelight Vigil

The Candlelight Vigil is an event to continually share Dr. King's message to inspire us to do more and better.  This year's theme,”Humanity Tied in a Single Garment of Destiny.”
We use the Kwanzaa principal of Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), to produce this event. We have speakers and occasionally performers sharing conscious words. It came about 11 years ago when we noticed younger people didn't seem to know much about Dr. King, his accomplishments, and movements that he led. We wanted something right in the community that was free to attendees. It was not meant to replace anything but to be in addition to.
It was also an opportunity to introduce some to our Dr. King statue. We are blessed to not only have a larger than life size statue and to have a street named after Dr. King but we have the statue on the street. That is rare. Even rarer is to have Coretta Scott King Roses. Thanks to the suggestion by Franklyn G. Verley and the support of Commissioner Lawrence Weekly.
