Shirley was the first Black woman politician who in 1968 was elected to the Congress. She was representing for seven from 1969 to 1983. 

She was the first woman to run for the first Black women to be a major-party nomination to President of the United States and to be the first women to run for the Democratic partys nomination.

Chisholm died in January 1, 2005 in her home in Florida after having several strokes.
