Douglas Kearney has published seven books ranging from poetry to essays to libretti. His most recent collection, Sho (Wave Books), is a Griffin Poetry Prize and Minnesota Book Award winner; a National Book Award, Pen America, and Big Other Book Award finalist. He is the 2021 recipient of OPERA America’s Campbell Opera Librettist Prize, created and generously funded by librettist/lyricist Mark Campbell. Kearney is a 2022 McKnight Writing Fellow. A Whiting Writer’s and Foundation for Contemporary Arts Cy Twombly awardee with residencies/fellowships from Cave Canem, The Rauschenberg Foundation, and others, he teaches Creative Writing at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities.

COVID-19 has taught me that health is wealth.

I used to fear doing something new, but I decided to make some drastic changes to have a healthy and fulfilling life. In January 2019, I decided to start running and push myself beyond the barrier of pain. In two years, I have run four ultramarathons, eight marathons and over 75 half marathons. In March 2021 I ran 37 consecutive Half Marathons in 31days, attempting to break the current Guinness world record of 20 consecutive Half Marathons.
 
Ultra running and Spartan racing taught me that no one cares about excuses in the real world. To accomplish something great you always need to go that extra mile. 

My last race 2 weeks back was the TGNY100, I ran 100kms first time and came 6th overall.

My Motto: Consistency and hard work will always get you to the finish line.
