My name is De’Leayah Wright. I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I am the product of a single, teenage mother of four children who did everything in her power to break the cycle of poverty, with limited access to education and employment. I am the eldest of four daughters raised by a mother who instilled in us the significance of achieving higher education. As a first-generation college graduate, my mother would always remind me: “your education is something that no one can ever take from you”. These words motivate me to further my education and be an excellent example for my three younger sisters. My particular background has propelled me to always seek out resources to achieve my goals. It was through collaboration, that I was able to find those resources I needed to succeed. The community that I grew up in has supported me and with every resource I gain, I try to give back that same support. After finishing my undergraduate Biology degree with a minor in Chemistry at Cal Poly Pomona, I returned as a youth leader at my church to help develop other potential first-generation college students. The circumstances in which I grew up are the reasons I value collaboration and community which is why I am dedicated to serving underserved communities. Breast Cancer is a recurring issue for women in my family that pushed me towards medicine. As a result of my family history, I plan to operate with compassion towards patients if given the opportunity. I hope to empower women as a female physician. Being from an under served community, I know that there is a history of fear and distrust when it comes to healthcare. As a physician, I intend to foster trust to bridge the gap between health care providers and under-served populations.
