Robert Richter! His new book Documentaries and Serendipity is worth celebrating. Robert Richter: His career, his often serendipitous life and life-changing films, including several Oscar nominations. He made or helped make 90 films, beginning in Oregon public television and the New York Times, then five years at CBS covering U.S. national politics with Walter Cronkite and other notable journalists, then covering pressing little reported global issues as an independent investigative producer. This book describes how he made documentaries; his outspoken freedom-risking and life-risking journalistic courage attacked by networks and major corporations, one of which described him as “America’s most dangerous” filmmaker because of his investigations that won top journalism awards. Richter has filmed in over 40 countries, with participants ranging from people living in garbage dumps, to tropical rainforest residents, to jailed political protesters, to those aspiring to become President of the United States, to Nobel Prize winners. His films have been praised as a “work of genius,” the “most beautiful film on ugliness ever made” and the definitive look at the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
