Over the past several years there have been an increasing number of studies looking at the health pros and cons associated with the age of having dogs spayed and neutered or even at all.  Some studies have shown a slight uptick in the incidence of certain orthopedic conditions in large dogs neutered before 1 year of age but at the same time do not account for several unwanted consequences of waiting that long.

In females, some studies have demonstrated a slight uptick in the incidence of certain cancers in dogs spayed prior one year of age, while increasing the incidence of other cancers whose incidences increaseswith each successive heat cycle when not spayed.

In this episode, Dr. Roger puts all of the studies into their proper context to offer listeners the most objective perspective so that they can make the most informed decision on when to have their dog neutered or spayed.
