SciFriday: The Science of Ghosts

We discuss the influence of science on our belief in ghosts, from ancient Greek philosophers like Thales and Epicurus through 18th century mystic Emanuel Swedenborg and the explosion of 19th century spiritualism beginning with the Fox sisters of New York in the 1840s.

Ironically, it was Darwinian evolution that decoupled the Bible from the belief that it was divinely inspired, and that’s freed people to interpret the Bible to say whatever they want it to say. So, science, instead of leading to the dawn of a new age of reason, has fed a fascination with the spirit realm that's totally ungrounded in scripture.
