Perry Brass, author of King of Angels comes to Stonewall Live! Thursday, June 21st 9PM EST.

King of Angels is a story about the unbreakable links between fathers and sons, about the search for identity and meaning in life, and about what 12-year-old boys do and talk about at a sleep-over. It is the coming-of-age story of Benjamin Rothberg, a 12-year-old master of “shape-shifting,” of changing identities while steadfastly grasping the unique features of his own. The child of a marriage between a passionate Northern Jewish father and a classic Southern WASP beauty, Benjamin must change identities from Jewish to non-Jewish, from being a smart, precocious self-aware kid to masquerading and “passing” as a regular boy, from growing into a sexually curious (and possibly gay) young man to experiencing a fragile adolescent innocence, almost in love with a pretty girl.

Set in the haunting, enchanting landscape of Savannah, Georgia during the tumultuous early 1960’s, King of Angels differs greatly from most novels with an LGBT theme: it is about a significant and extremely compelling relationship between a father and son—told from the bond that both father and son feel, despite differences in generation, the many secrets that separate them, and barriers of temperament but not of basic character. This nourishing father-and-son relationship is something many gay men (as well as straight men) seek, but it has been sadly missing from most literature.

From Savannah, GA, poet, novelist, playwright, and activist Perry Brass has published 16 books, winning numerous awards for his poetry, plays, and fiction. In 1972, he co-founded the Gay Men's Health Project Clinic, He is currently a coordinator of the Rainbow Book Fair, the oldest LGBT book fair in the U.S. For more information: www.perrybrass.com
