"La Señora de Cao" was discovered in 2006 by archaeologists at the Archaeological Project of El Brujo led by Régulo Franco, who were astounded when they found this funerary context intact. Aware of the value of this character, but not yet knowing about the surprises they were to find within the bundle, they dedicated their top care to the study of this finding. During the meticulous and thorough lab work of six months, the team of scientists —led by archaeologist and textile expert Arabel Fernández López, and with Dr. John Verano, physical anthropologist at the University of Tulane and an expert in Mochica bioanthropology— removed the bundle from the body and discovered the treasures kept by the 26 layers wrapping the Señora de Cao.

Decorated with glittering nose-rings, crowns and necklaces, wrapped in exquisite textiles, flanked by the weapons of power of the Mochica rulers, the Señora de Cao, also known as the Tattooed Lady [Dama de los Tatuajes], soon caught the attention of the whole world. Bringing about several articles in international magazines, its replica has been seen by over half a million people from different countries. This enigmatic character is the center of the new Cao Museum, in which visitors will be able to see the actual Señora de Cao after touring the fascinating universe of the ancient dwellers of the Chicama valley. Spanish Audio and authentic Peru Music.
