Cyrille Aimée was born in Fontainebleau, France. Her father is French and her mother is from the Dominican Republic. She's got all the basic makings of a good "sofrito" for cooking (she's tasty and spicey) and she scats better than Ella Fitzgerald.
Every year in June, her village Samois-sur-Seine, welcomes gypsies who come from all over Europe to set up caravans in nearby meadows for the Django Reinhardt Festival, in honor of the legendary guitarist who also once lived in Samois-sur-Seine. As a child, Cyrille fell in love with gypsy music and way of life. She spent evenings at their camps, learned their language and began to sing by the fire with Django's descendants.
While Cyrille became adept at guitar, it was her voice that most struck her professor, who invited her to sing at the Django Festival in 2000—a decisive experience as Cyrille then decided to become a singer. Intent to continue studying music by day and performing at night, Cyrille elected to not join her family when they moved to Singapore, and decided instead to attend the American School of Modern Music in Paris. This concert had no rhyme or reason. I threw it together because this young musician's voice is so delightful and unusual that I wanted others to enjoy it as well.
