Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev (28-0-1, 25 KOs)* and Nadjib "IronDjib" Mohammedi (38-4, 23 KOs) started off the main event slow, just feeling each other out in the first round. At the start of the second round, Kovalev engaged in an aggressive attack on Mohammedi, which knocked the challenger down. In the third round, the chants for Kovalev began to ring out from the Las Vegas fans, and the champion knocked down Nadjib again. This time the referee stopped the fight at 2:38.
Beibut Shumenov (16-2, 10 KOs) defeated B.J. Flores (31-2-1, 20 KOs) by unanimous decision Saturday night to win a cruiserweight world title on Premier Boxing Champions on NBCSN from the Pearl at Palms Casino Resort.
In the HBO co-feature tonight, Jean Pascal and Yunieski Gonzalez squared off in a 10 round affair at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Gonzalez started off with the hotter hand and took the initiative in the fight. As the heavy underdog, Gonzalez stepped up in a big way. His jab was sharp throughout the fight, but he used it consciously and consistently.
Pascal willed his way into the fight and was never really shut out in many rounds. He always found a way to close the gap and even landed some big shots that could’ve made the difference in edging out Gonzalez.
In further action, Dominican power-puncher Claudio Marrero (19-1, 14 KOs) delivered a vicious second-round knockout over former world champion Rico Ramos (24-5, 12 KOs). Marrero connected with a strong overhand left that immediately sent Ramos to the canvas, prompting referee Jay Nady to wave off the count. The knockout came twenty seconds into the round.
