From round 1, there were boos coming from the crowd. Cunningham looked solid, but as usual he had no pop behind his punches, while Tarver had more power, especially in his left, but his punches were slower and seemed to be telegraphed.

Lucian Bute returned to action after a 19-month layoff and a record of 1-2 in his three previous outings. Bute took on Andrea Di Luisa in the main event of a PBC card on NBCSN in front of a very pro-Bute crowd in his adopted home of Canada at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Earlier tonight on Unimas’ Solo Boxeo we got to see Jerry Belmontes back in action for the first time since losing to Dierry Jean not long ago in June. This time, he took on tough New Jersey native, Jason Sosa.

Jason Sosa has been on an extended comeback trail since taking his only career loss back in 2010 against Treysean Wiggins. Aside from two majority decision draws and a majority decision win, the Puerto Rican fighter out of Camden, New Jersey has had 11 consecutive stoppages. Now, Sosa adds another fighter on the long list of fighters to his resume, as he cracked his most known opponent to date, Jerry Belmontes in just 1 round. Giving Belmontes his only career stoppage in 27 fights.

Bute started off with the jab, moving it up and down, but mostly up. He looked a little awkward in the first round. I’m not sure if it was ring rust on Bute’s behalf or my own lack of familiarity with the fighter who resides in Canada because I haven’t seen him fight since he lost to Jean Pascal in January of last year, not to mention he’s only competed 3 times in as many years coming into tonight’s fight.

Eleider Alvarez got all he could handle against Isidro Prieto in their 12 round light heavyweight co-feature on the undercard of Lucian Bute’s headliner on PBC on NBCSN. The pair of undefeated fighters squared off at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where Alvarez now resides.
