After allowing a pair of early touchdown passes, East Carolina held SMU off the scoreboard for two-plus quarters, but a pair of Pirate turnovers did ECU in during the fourth quarter.
ECU, which is now 1-5 overall and 0-2 in The American, will return to action on Saturday when the Pirates square off with Charlotte (1-5, 0-2) for the first time in school history. The Homecoming match-up with the 49ers, which will be streamed on ESPN+, is scheduled for a 2pm kickoff.
