John William Coltrane was born on September 23, 1926, and died on July 17, 1967. He was an American jazz saxophonist and music composer. Coltrane worked in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career and helped pioneer the use of modes, being one of the players at the forefront of free jazz.
