We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind. Mind is your only ruler, sovereign. The man who is not able to develop and use his mind is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind.– Marcus Garvey

                                                                               DECONSTRUCTING MENTAL SLAVERY

Chattel slavery was a system of war and captivity. Captives of this system endured both systematic physical and mental pain/trauma.  Much of the physical has subsided but the mental factor is alive and has taken center stage.  Those who study and try to understand what has happened do so under the banner of post-traumatic slave syndrome, mentacide, internalized oppression and mental slavery.  Many African centered thinkers have taken steps to identify the symptoms of these terms in order to develop an agenda or curriculum that can be used for healing.

Our topic focus on this week’s Black Reality Think Tank broadcast is mental slavery.  Our conversation will attempt to define, deconstruct, and discuss healing possibilities based on mental slavery.  The goal and objective of the Black Reality Think Tank are to understand the past, dissect the present and support implementing a meaningful future.
