Jamaican parents are by nature very strict. Children are constantly encouraged to  excel academically. They are pushed and at times critized harshly if they do not do well in school. They are also encouraged to actively participate in sports. The main sports are Track and field , Cricket , Football (soccer ).  Jamaican do extreamly well at individual sports.  Grandmothers plays a very important roll in the family. She is relied on for guidance and wisdom and also helping to care for the children of her children. Jamaican parents see their children as "children" and not as their "friends" for the most part and they can be very stern.

They believe in rewarding  their children with  praises for effort and  accomplishments . I think most live their lives through their children . THose jamaican who did not have the resourses and opportunity to realize their  dreams  (especially in acedemics ) are more demanding on their children to do" better" than they did.

Unlike some cultures where parents tend to sever the connection with their children, once they have acquired their legal age. Jamaican families remain a constant guiding force in their children’s lives well beyond adulthood. You are never too old to be scolded or be given advice. As far as they are concerned you are always their child and they take that responsibility seriously.  Most Jamaican get  the freedom to grow -up  being children meaning playtime unsupervised and children  tend to be better problem solvers  dealing with day to day issues as it realted to relationships with other children. Jamaican Children enjoy great fun tim e at the beach and on the play grounds.
