Nicole Metzler married for 6 years. Had 3 failed IUIs and a failed cycle of IVF, and two miscarriages. Nicole has become passionate about educating military spouse friends and friends of friends about a very common (but seldom discussed) problem: the difficult intersection between the military and infertility. It’s hard for some couples to start a family; it’s even harder when one person spends a lot of time on the other side of the globe. But Nicole was lucky enough to declare Mission Accomplished when their daughter was born after trying IVF at a clinic in England that they never would’ve gone to if she and her husband hadn’t been stationed there! The Metzlers brought their little sparkler into the world through a Cesarean Section at 39 weeks gestation at the urging of Nicole’s physicians due to the steeply increased risk for stillbirth associated with a “geriatric pregnancy” during the third trimester. My name is Dr. Monica Maa and I live in Clinton, MD, a suburb of Washington, DC. I have been married to my husband MenSa for 11 years. We have two daughters, Genesis (age 8) and Makeda (age 6). Both were born in our home with the assistance of midwives. My husband was the one who initiated the conversation of having a natural birth long before we had children. We both liked the idea of bringing our children into the world in the comfort of our own home, and not in the sterile, impersonal setting of a hospital. As a veterinarian by profession, I've always been impressed by the ability of other mammalian species to give birth without assistance and without fear. As a fellow mammal, I figured that I should be able to do the same! I was very happy with our decision to pursue natural childbirth; although each birth experience was different, we were pleased with the outcomes.
