Jamaica celebrates 60 years of independence.from the United Kingdom. Jamaicans all over the world celebrate this day every year on the first monday of August. to coincide with the holiday to celebrate both Independence and Emancipation, This year's theme is "RE.IGNITING A NATION FOR GREATNESS". The theme beckons all Jamaicans to rediscover their roots and reignitie their passion for the Jamaican culture.After a two years hiatus , Jamaica;s festivities are BACK! The icing on the Jamaican ndependence festival's cake is the Popular Song Competition. In 1962, then Minister of Community Development and later Prime Minister of Jamaica the Hon Edward Seaga initiated this festival song competition. The festivities include Agicultural exhibitions, Street parades, Festival Queen Competition, the Popular song contest and a gala at the National Stadium.
The festival song winners include the likes of Eric Donaldson, the Astroaunts, Stanley and the Turbines, Ry Ryan among others.
