Pittsburgh, PA – When an organization restructures or merges with another company, some tough decisions will have to be made and some employees let go. It’s the nature of business. It’s not personal, but employees are still people: people with families and responsibilities faced with an uncertain future.
Celeste Calfe is the founder of Calfe & Associates, a human resource consulting firm specializing in corporate outplacement. Outplacement is a benefit provided by the employers to help employees who have been let go to land on their feet. Calfe offers career counseling and skills development to help prepare these individuals for a job search.
“I always tell the folks when I first meet them, because emotions are pretty raw, ‘If you’re sitting across the table from me, it’s not because you did anything wrong. says Calfe. “You got caught up in the event. Now you’ve been unleashed into a world of opportunity and possibility. This is your chance to work with a career coach so let’s go for it.”
According to Calfe, we process the same emotions when we lose a job that we do when faced with death or the end of a relationship. You’re going to be emotional, but you have to find a healthy way to stay composed; you want to put your best foot forward at all times when searching for a new job.
“It’s easy to be overwhelmed,” says Calfe. “They often want to call their wife, husband or partner, but I say, ‘Why don’t we talk first? You can tell them what happened, but you can also tell them that you’re already working with a career coach who is going to give you all the tools to help find a great new job.”
