St. Bernadette Soubirous described what she saw when the Virgin Mary appeared to her at a nearby garbage dump that became a grotto at Massabielle located in Lourdes France.
The Virgin Mary identified herself saying, “I am the Immaculate Conception”. This is a most important title as Mary is acknowledging that she was clean from the moment of her conception.
When questioned, St. Bernadette explained, “I raised my head and looked towards the grotto. I saw a Lady dressed in white, wearing a white dress, a blue girdle and a yellow rose on each foot, the same color as the chain of her Rosary: the beads of her Rosary were white.”
You might have heard it said that a picture says a thousand words, let’s test that theory looking at the image of Our Lady.
The white dress has a special meaning in itself. Consider that Mary is the Immaculate Conception. She wore a white dress which represents traditionally what is pure, what is perfected, what is innocent, and what is complete. Mother Mary fits this description in the most unique way.
The color white also has a state of being made clean, giving a new beginning. White represents being totally open, it is cleanliness personified. This symbolism really speaks loudly of who Mary is.
