The area was already known for over a century for the devotional tradition with a copy of the portrait of the Holy Virgin of Czestochowa, crowned since 1717 in the parish church. In 1877, the Mother of God appeared again and again, between June 27 and September 16, to three women: 13 year old Justina Schaffrinski, 12 year old Barbara Samulowski and another 45 year old who remains unknown. Our Lady appeared to the visionaries in different ways: sometimes sitting and surrounded by angels, her face radiant in a bright cloud, some other time with a crown on her head and the Child Jesus in her arms. Very little is known of the nature of the messages. But we know that the main message of her appearances was this: "I want you to recite the rosary every day." Following the news of the apparitions developed a remarkable pilgrimage, encouraged by the local parish priest. Most of the pilgrims arrived in that place (then part of the Prussian territory) from Poland. The miraculous case was examined by the competent Ordinariate of Frauensburg who gave an unfavorable opinion to the recognition of the apparitions. On the centenary of the phenomena, however, Cardinal Wojtyla officially recognized the apparitions.
